Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (August 8, 2022) – On August 4^th, the AAA Five Diamond Grand Velas Los Cabos was awarded its Blue Flag Distinction for the 2022 – 2023 season. To be eligible for the accolade, the resort was evaluated against a series of rigorous environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria. To keep the beach clean, the resort uses various methods, from manual cleaning and sand screening through sieves made from recycled material to a Sandbox Tractor. The resort also follows the protocols for Sea Turtle nesting in accordance with the Department of Ecology and Environment. In complement with the Blue Flag and other current sustainability initiatives, the resort will soon be integrating short environmental education activities for kids into its activity program. Topics covered will range from the marine mammals of Baja California Sur and recycling to the conservation of marine life and care of the ocean.

Since opening, Grand Velas Los Cabos has implemented several protocols to benefit the planet and community. When it comes to ecological practices, the resort employs waste separation onsite; recycles burned cooking oils with a supplier for conversion to biodegradable fuel; supports local recycling programs in charge of processing glass, plastic, metal, cardboard, and toxic material; provides organic waste to local farms; composts to create a natural fertilizer for onsite gardens; and has several programs for reducing plastic for both guests and employees. Additionally, it operates self-sufficient reverse osmosis desalination plants, preheats all water with solar panels, minimizes water utilized in the entire washing process with an onsite water treatment plant, and reduces pollutant emissions and minimizes energy consumption with state-of-the-art air conditioning equipment.
