The Los Cabos Tourism Board is aware of misinformation circulating regarding visa requirements for U.S. citizens. Please be advised that as of March 2025, there are no changes to existing visa policies. U.S. citizens traveling to Los Cabos do not require a visa for tourism or short-term stays.

What is the passenger allowance?
It is a benefit that allows travelers to bring personal items and purchases into Mexico without paying import taxes, in addition to their regular luggage.What is the allowed amount?
Travelers may bring goods valued at up to USD $500, regardless of whether they enter by air, land, or sea.What personal items are allowed in luggage?
You may bring the following personal items:- Up to 2 photo or video cameras
- Photographic equipment
- 3 mobile phones
- 1 GPS device
- 1 electronic organizer
- 2 tablets
- 2 laptops or similar portable computers
- 1 portable printer or copier
- 1 portable projector with accessories
How much alcohol and tobacco can I bring?
Travelers aged 18 and over may bring:- Up to 20 packs of cigarettes, or
- 25 cigars, or
- 200 g of tobacco, and
- Up to 3 liters of alcoholic beverages and 6 liters of wine
Can families combine their allowance?
Yes. Family members traveling together may combine their allowances to bring in purchases jointly.Does the allowance apply to purchases made in border regions?
Yes. Purchases made in the border region qualify for the USD $500 allowance, as long as a valid tax receipt is provided.What is the Héroes Paisanos program?
During official Héroes Paisanos periods, travelers entering Mexico from the border region may bring goods valued up to USD $500 under the passenger allowance. -
In accordance with Mexico’s Customs Law and applicable foreign trade regulations, all goods entering the country are subject to inspection and classification by customs authorities.
In this context, jewelry—including engagement rings and wedding bands—may be considered imported merchandise when transported in their original box, case, or packaging. As such, these items may be subject to import duties and applicable taxes (including VAT and other applicable charges), even if they are intended for temporary use during a celebration.
For this reason, travelers are advised to take precautions when carrying high-value items. If in doubt, visitors should declare such items to Mexican Customs upon arrival in order to avoid unexpected charges or possible retention of the items.For more information, please visit:
